Writer's Block: Independence Days

While India's Independence Day is often celebrated with kites, the US celebrated with fireworks. How does each methods reflect its culture?
I guess I don't understand why everyone is complaining about how "loaded" this question is. Regardless, it's still quite embarassing for America in my opinion. To this day I do not understand why people actually go out and spend thousands of dollars on OOOH SHINY BRIGHT EXPLOSIONS. Why don't you all just sit around a lightbulb? If you stare at it long enough it will have the same effect and is probably cheaper.
